HOW TO DIG

Make room around the stone before lifting it out.

1
Cover the work surface.

Place the block on a covered, stable table. Read the supplied guide and leave space to set the finds aside.

2
Dig around each find.

Use the chisel to remove small amounts of the block. Once a specimen appears, clear the material around it instead of striking it directly.

3
Switch to the brush.

Brush off loose material and follow the guide for further cleaning. Keep cleaned specimens separate from the digging debris.

4
Match, count, and store.

Compare the finds with the guide and count the collection. Let cleaned pieces dry before putting them in the pouch.

MATCH YOUR FINDS

Use more than color to choose a name.

Open the full-color guide next to your cleaned finds. Look for an obvious feature first: stripes, spots, a pointed shape, or a shiny surface.

If two pieces seem similar, place them together and compare those features with the pictures. Keep any uncertain matches to one side and look again after sorting the rest.

LOOK CLOSER

Compare the details you can actually see.

Pick two finds and inspect them through the magnifier. Can you see bands on one and spots on the other? Do the surfaces catch the light in the same way?

On your own sheet of paper, draw each piece and write its guide name beside it. Add one visible feature so you can try matching the collection again later.

SHARE THE DIG

Two chisels. Two brushes. One block.

When two children share, let one dig while the other brushes a removed specimen or checks the guide. Switch roles as you uncover more pieces.

Digging
Share the block and the single hammer.
Comparing
Take turns with the magnifier and guide.
Keeping
Store cleaned, dry finds in the collecting pouch.

For separate digging stations, the 12-block gemstone kit gives each child an individual block.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

A few useful distinctions.

Jumbo Gems box showing eighteen finds and five digging tools
Is the purple block a large natural amethyst?

No. It is a manufactured digging block shaped and colored like a crystal cluster. Dig through it to uncover the 18 separate specimens inside.

What does “5 digging tools” include?

You get one hammer, two chisels, and two brushes. The magnifying glass is an additional item, along with the collecting pouch and learning guide.

Is this a crystal-growing kit?

No. You uncover existing specimens and compare them with the guide. No crystal-growing powder, mixing vessel, or growing experiment is included.

Can two children share the kit?

Yes. There are two chisels and two brushes, but only one block, one hammer, and one magnifier. Take turns at the block and share the magnifier after removing the finds.

Can I choose the packaging version?

No. New and old box designs ship at random. The contents are identical, and requests for a particular version cannot be accommodated.

OTHER WAYS TO DIG

Separate blocks, planets, or fossils?

Choose a different setup if you need individual digs for a group or want a different kind of collection.
