The specimens are hidden in the block. The pouch gives you a place to keep them together once the digging is done.

The first discovery

Spot a little color. Dig a little further.

Start at the surface and scrape away small amounts of plaster. When a specimen appears, work around it until you can lift it free.

Switch to the brush to clear the loose material and see more of the surface. There are five finds to uncover before the block is finished.

Follow the digging steps

Compare each actual find with the pictures instead of expecting an exact match in size, shape or color.

From block to collection

Make room for the dig.

The instruction sheet takes you through setup, excavation and cleaning. Keep it nearby as you work.

Included Crystal Mining Kit instruction sheet with digging steps and crystal information
1

Set up the dig.

Place the block on an easy-to-clean surface or a large sheet of paper. Read the instruction sheet before starting.

2

Work around each find.

Use the chisel to scrape away the plaster. Work carefully around an exposed specimen until you can free it.

3

Brush away the plaster.

Use the dusting brush or a cloth to remove what remains. Follow the supplied guide if further cleaning is needed.

4

Compare and collect.

Look closely with the magnifier, compare your finds with the guide, then keep the collection together in the pouch.

After the last find

Look closer before you pack up.

Line up the five specimens. Which one has bands? Which looks glassy? Turn each one under the magnifier and compare what changes.

Compare
Look at color, shape and surface detail.
Match
Check the pictured names in the guide.
Describe
Tell someone what helped you make a match.

If a find does not look exactly like the picture, keep comparing. That is a good reason to take another look.

One block, shared discoveries

Take turns digging. Compare the finds together.

Sit beside your child and let the next discovery set the pace. One person can dig while the other checks the guide, then swap jobs.

There is one set of tools in the box. For a group that needs separate blocks and tools, the 12-block kit below gives each child a dig of their own.

A collection to keep

The digging ends. The comparing does not.

Before packing up
Remove remaining loose plaster and let any damp finds dry.
Keep it together
Store the five specimens in the collecting pouch.
Try another comparison
Bring them out alongside other stones you already collect.

A few practical answers

Before you open the block.

Check the contents, choose a work surface and leave a little time for cleanup.

Are all eight pictured minerals included?

Each kit contains five specimens. The identification image shows eight possible types; it is not a list of eight items supplied in every box.

What comes with the block?

You receive one hammer, one chisel, one dusting brush, one magnifier, one collecting pouch and one instruction sheet. The five specimens are hidden inside the block.

Do we grow the crystals?

No mixing or growing is involved. Dig the existing specimens out of the block, brush them clean and compare them.

Is this one activity for a group?

There is one block and one set of tools. You can take turns; choose a set of individual blocks if you want everyone to have a separate dig.

What age is it for?

The packaging and product information specify ages 6 and up. Small parts are a choking hazard. Not for children under 3 years.

Will there be cleanup?

Yes. Removing the plaster leaves loose material. Cover your work surface before digging and clear it after the activity.
