FOSSIL EXAMPLES

Five in the block—not every specimen in the photo.

The product image shows eight example types. Your kit contains five fossils in total, so use this image as a reference rather than a checklist of eight guaranteed finds.

Shark tooth
Petrified wood
Brachiopod
Coral
Sand dollar
Clam
Snail fossil
Crinoid

Compare the specimens you uncover with the supplied guide. Do not expect every shape, size, or color to match the display image exactly.

HOW TO DIG

Clear the block around each find.

1
Prepare the table.

Place the block on an easy-to-clean surface or a large sheet of paper, as shown in the guide. Leave space to set down the fossils.

2
Uncover the edges.

Gently scrape the block with the digging tool. Remove the material around each fossil before lifting it out; do not strike an exposed specimen.

3
Brush away the loose material.

Use the dusting brush to clean the find. Follow the supplied guide for any remaining plaster rather than scraping the fossil itself.

4
Compare and keep.

Look at the shape and surface with the magnifier, then check the guide. Put the cleaned, dry finds in the pouch and tidy the work area.

READ THE GUIDE

Look for a feature. Then look for a match.

Start with what you can see: a pointed edge, a curved shell, repeated ridges, or a spiral. Compare that feature with the pictures and names in the guide.

Keep a find beside the guide while you check it. If the match is unclear, compare the outline and surface together rather than choosing by color alone.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK

Small details are easier to compare up close.

Set two fossils next to each other. Use the magnifier to compare the lines and textures on their surfaces, then describe one difference before swapping specimens.

You can make a simple record on your own sheet of paper: draw each find, add a possible name, and note the feature you used to identify it.

AT HOME OR SHARED

Take turns with one block.

This box has one set of tools. When sharing, let one child dig while another brushes a removed specimen or looks through the guide. Swap jobs when you uncover the next find.

For one child
Work through the block at your own pace.
For siblings
Share the digging tools and take turns examining the finds.
After the session
Store cleaned, dry fossils in the supplied pouch.

If each child needs a separate dig, the 12-block gemstone set provides individual blocks and chisels.

AGE & HANDLING

Read the instructions. Set up together.

The package is marked ages 6+. Help younger children prepare the work area and handle the tools. Keep uncovered specimens away from younger siblings.

Small parts
Choking hazard. Not for children under 3 years.
Digging tools
Use as directed. Do not strike exposed fossils.
Magnifying glass
Do not look at the sun through the lens.
Cleanup
Clean the tools, work area, and hands after digging.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

What to expect from this dig.

Fossil dig kit box marked five authentic fossils and ages six and up
Will I receive every fossil shown?

No. Each kit contains five fossils in total. The specimen image shows eight example types; it is not an eight-piece contents list or a promise that every pictured type is in one box.

Does this kit contain a dinosaur skeleton to assemble?

No. You uncover individual fossil specimens, then clean, examine, and keep them. Choose a skeleton excavation kit if you want interlocking model parts to assemble.

Do I need to buy digging tools separately?

No. A hammer, chisel, brush, and magnifier are included, along with the collecting pouch and instruction sheet. Bring a cover for the work surface; a digging tray is not listed in the contents.

Can two children use one kit?

You can take turns digging, brushing, and looking through the magnifier. There is one block and one set of tools, not a separate block for each child.

Can we reuse the block?

The block is broken down during the dig and cannot be reset. Keep the fossils, magnifier, guide, and pouch for later comparison and storage.

OTHER WAYS TO DIG

Choose the activity your child wants next.

Build a model, collect crystals, or give each child a separate block. The differences below can help you choose.
